o Motivational interviewing is an effective communication tool to help people living with mental illness, addictions, and other chronic conditions to make positive behavioral changes to support their overall health. Instead of a one-way, directive approach, motivational interviewing provides a framework for creating a dialogue about behavior change. As a health care provider (and in many other contexts, too), you can use these tools to create conversations that empower the people you serve to make meaningful changes.
